The Air Liquide plant in North Las Vegas will be a landmark on the West Coast’s “hydrogen” roadmap. “This exciting project is our first large-scale investment dedicated to the new mobility market in the United States” explains David Edwards, Director and Advocate for hydrogen at Air Liquide. “This industrial unit will have an unprecedented capacity for liquid hydrogen production dedicated to the mobility market. The following vehicles to be impacted include, but are not limited to: automobiles, coaches, buses, forklifts and, last but not least, heavy-duty vehicles.”Kiloton CO2-reductie
Toward a low-carbon production process
Even though hydrogen as a fuel is much less pollutive than gasoline or diesel, the impact of its manufacturing process must be taken into account. As David Edwards says, “The North Las Vegas plant will be built on our well-known technology. Our mobility customers are demanding renewable hydrogen supply. We are meeting this demand by displacing natural gas with biogas sourced from landfills and digesters.” Biogas resulting from the fermentation of organic materials has a double advantage. It reduces the production process’s carbon impact therefore making it possible to provide consumers with low-carbon hydrogen.
The startup of the North Las Vegas plant is a significant step in decarbonizing the transportation sector in the West of the United States. It is the pride of the teams who worked on its design and construction.
