Professional Development Specialist - Global Energy & Materials

 You will be based in our office in Amsterdam, Brussels, London or Munich as part of McKinsey’s Professional Development team for the Global Energy & Materials (GEM) Practice.

The team is part of the broader People function with a focus on supporting the development and experience of our Practice consultants developing capabilities and serving clients in the Energy & Materials space. 

You will report to the Associate Director for Professional Development for the GEM Practice, based in Munich.

The Global Energy & Materials Practice (GEM) is the home to >650 experienced professionals globally, thereof about 300 in Europe. Our consultants work on topics such as energy transition, green power, green steel or applying analytics to fisheries and land use management – based on tech enabled assets to generate data driven insights. It is a fast growing, very international and dynamic environment.

You will be working closely with different colleagues across the firm, such as HR and PD colleagues in various Offices across Europe, GEM Recruiting, and the leadership of the teams you take care of.

You will lead Professional Development for a team of consultants in the Energy and Materials Practice.

You will lead professional development and staffing for a subset of our GEM experts and solution colleagues in Europe and serve as lead PD counsellor to Solution and Practice leaders. Based on developing a close professional relationship with your consultants, and an in-depth understanding of their professional aspirations, experience, strength and development needs, you will guide them throughout their McKinsey journey in the Practice. 

You will help with onboarding into the Practice, you provide coaching and guidance on staffing, support on the evaluation process, help on their skill development and career progression throughout the review cycles. You will be working closely with the respective leadership to provide a cohesive view on the team’s performance, deployment and health, identify pain points and lead improvement initiatives.

You will build strong relationships with the local and global network of professional development colleagues to facilitate timely information sharing, cross-office mobility opportunities, best practice exchange, etc. You will also be involved in conducting analyses, regularly updating relevant databases and facilitating generation of key development and staffing metrics for the office leadership.

• Undergraduate degree
• 5+ years relevant experience in professional development or people areas, ideally in professional services firm
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
• Intuitive judgment and strong interpersonal skills, ability to build trust-based relationships across levels and maturity in ambiguous situations
• Ability to work collaboratively in international team environment
• Exceptional organizational and administrative skills; ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize, track record as self-starter
• The ability to professionally manage confidential information
