Applications are invited for PhD positions within the National Doctoral Program in Space Science and Technology, under the Earth and the Sun-Earth System Curriculum at the University of Calabria. The research project, supervised by Professor Sergio Servidio, focuses on the nonlinear modeling of solar wind dynamics and its interactions with Earth’s magnetosheath, magnetosphere, and ionosphere. The work involves advanced numerical simulations (including magnetohydrodynamics, Vlasov, and Particle-in-Cell methods) alongside the analysis of in situ data from major space missions such as Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe, and the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS).
Successful candidates will investigate turbulence and large-scale plasma structures in the heliosphere, employing both high-fidelity kinetic and fluid simulations and data-driven validation using the latest spacecraft observations. The overarching aim is to enhance the understanding of space weather phenomena and to bridge theoretical models with real-world measurements.
Requirements
– A strong background in physics, space science, astrophysics, computational science, geophysics, or related fields.
– Familiarity with numerical simulations and data analysis is highly desirable.
– Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
– Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and international research environment.
